What is the life of film forgotten?
That's the idea behind a project my colleague Dillon and I set into motion called Film Forgotten. The project revolves around discovering, scanning, and cataloging collections of old film negatives found at estate sales or flea markets. We began with an Instagram page where we curate and post sequences of images, but I decided I wanted to explore the concept further in the form of a publication. Five different anonymous photographers are featured in this inaugural edition of Film Forgotten. More volumes are planned as the collection and project grows.
Viewers are led into the space of the book in the same way that we encounter the photos in the wild: inside of vintage slide boxes.
Type throughout this project is set with the help of an old Smith Corona typewriter. The inconsistent and jogged mechanical letterforms contrast with the otherwise clean and organized sequence of imagery.
Various logo marks are under consideration for the Instagram page as well as the publication. These play off the idea of an unfinished or lost thought, utilizing the typographic punctuation of ellipses to form film strip-like graphics.
